Consternation. At a time when “MeToo” movements are multiplying, when legislative bodies are tightening laws against femicide, when the world is outraged by the treatment of women in Iran—where are the voices rising in protest against a woman being reduced to a mere body, all for buzz?
On the red carpet of the Grammy Awards, a woman walks forward, wrapped in a heavy black coat. Her husband follows behind, urging her to remove the garment that encumbers her. And what do we see? A bare body beneath a barely-there transparent dress. Not a single journalist expresses shock—on the contrary, a sea of photographers frantically captures the moment, as the young woman becomes nothing more than an object, a trophy, a thing. Where, then, are the voices of the Femen movement, which claims to represent women worldwide? Where are all those so-called feminist actresses? Am I the only one who finds this shocking, humiliating, degrading? Is this truly the role of women in the 21st century? A mere sexual object? I am outraged, appalled, and furious. A woman is not just a body to be displayed at will.
In a world that preaches gender equality, we are far from the ideal. Instead, women are being oppressed, enslaved, and made invisible all over the world. What about Afghan women, now reduced to shadows? What about Iranian women, who have only their bodies to express their defiance? What about the countless anonymous victims who die every day at the hands of their partners? Rather than speaking up for these suffering women, we have become voyeurs, hungrily consuming articles about a woman likely under her husband’s control, feasting on images that flirt with indecency.
We deserve better than to be relegated to the roles of sexual objects or mere mothers. We are whole beings, and we should stand together to demand respect and dignity. All women united—an impossible dream in a world ruled by and for men?
