People have always been categorized, but with social media and trends, this categorization has become even more prominent. Social media is a great tool to express individuality, but it also comes with its challenges. As algorithms learn your preferences, they start showing you only what you like. While this can feel comforting, it can also create an echo chamber where you’re surrounded by people who think just like you. This is both convenient and potentially dangerous.
Some trends can influence people indirectly, often without them even realizing it.
Take, for example, the « I’m just a girl » trend. It’s fun and cute on the surface, with videos of girls baking or shopping for makeup accompanied by the text « I’m just a girl. » However, this seemingly innocent trend reinforces stereotypes, subtly drawing a line between what’s considered « girls’ things » and « boys’ things. »
Another example is the rise of « girl aesthetics. » We now have categories like the coquette girl, the dark coquette girl, the clean girl, and more. While these aesthetics are great for creating Pinterest boards, they’re less helpful when it comes to personal identity. Comparing yourself to these ideals or trying to mold yourself to fit them can be harmful. Some videos even go as far as offering tutorials on « how to be that girl, » glorifying specific types of people and implying there’s only one ideal way to exist.
Honestly, I love trends and I often follow them. They can be fun and inspiring, but they should never dictate who you are. Let them be tools for creativity and self-expression—not cages that limit your individuality ! 💕
