The « pick-me » concept

by Ravène d’Istrigny

As a definition, a « pick-me girl » is someone who puts other girls down to make herself stand out. She tries to seem different from other girls in order to please boys and gain men’s attention.

In contrast, a « girls’ girl » uplifts and supports other women, fostering solidarity and encouragement. For « pick-me girls, » this solidarity is often absent.

Still, while these girls do exist, the term « pick-me » has been stretched to include almost any girl who knows and confidently says she’s different. Nowadays, people often label as « pick-me » girls who express that they don’t like wearing makeup or who happen to have more male than female friends.

The conclusion is simple: don’t be a pick-me, but don’t be a hater either. By accusing other girls of being pick-me’s, you may actually contribute to the very thing you’re trying to avoid: the degradation of women.

Women already face enough challenges in a world filled with judgment. Let’s not add more hate to it—we’re stronger together.
